Our annual Christmas Tree sale starts this Saturday, November 26th. Saturdays 9-3pm and Sundays 12-3pm.

Flag Retirement Ceremony Planned for November 11th

Be part of a new community event hosted by the Mishawaka Lions Club and The Res.
Our goal is to create a unique community celebration to honor the retirement of American flags, in partnership with our local veterans, civic organizations, and our city police and fire departments.
Using the newly rebuilt amphitheater (the Dave Norris Amphitheater) for visitor seating, the fire bowl will provide ample space to burn a large number of flags.

The ceremony will begin at 6pm on Friday, Nov. 11, 2011 – Veteran’s Day and continue until midnight

The community will be invited to retire their personal flags and pay their respects to our flag and our veterans.

Construction update: new entrance to Res off Capital Ave

With the construction along SR 331 adjacent to The Res, many in the community are unaware that The Res is not only still THERE, but very actively growing with the increase of use and development of upgraded facilities, such as the amphitheater.

Scout Lane is no longer connected to Capital Avenue. Visitors to The Res will enter on a new gravel road that begins immediately south of the railroad crossing. When the SR 331 construction is complete, the new entrance to The Res will be off 7th Street behind The Res

Dedication of Amphitheater planned for Sept. 24th at 3pm

With the completion of Nick VanNevel’s Eagle Scout project that rebuilt the seating at the firebowl area at The Res, the board voted unanimously to name the amphitheater the David Norris Amphitheater. The project was dedicated to the memory of David Norris by VanNevel. Ranger Norris passed away unexpectedly in April this year, and was a vital part of the success of The Res.

The dedication ceremony will be on Saturday, September 24, 2011 at 3pm at the amphitheater. This major project became a reality with the large financial support given by area civic groups, individuals and foundations. Over 400 man-hours were logged by over two dozen volunteers. All donors and volunteers have been invited to the dedication.

Obituary for Ranger Dave Norris

David Norris, 60, went to be with the Lord, Saturday, April 9, 2011. He served as Public Health Planning Coordinator for Elkhart County. Dave graduated from Purdue University with a Bachelor’s of Science in Education with concentrations in American History, Sociology and Political Science, and the University of Notre Dame with a Master’s of Science in Environmental Studies, with an emphasis on Urban and Regional Planning. David was born on February 26, 1951, in Rochester, IN, to the late Laurence H. and Marguerite (Slonaker) Norris. He is survived by his wife, Janet; son, Darrell Davis of Indianapolis; granddaughter, Brielle Davis; daughter, Antoinette Franklin of Mishawaka; sisters, Doris (Timothy) Goode of Rochester and Doreen (Steven) Ehresman of Lafayette; and a host of family and friends who loved him. Services will be 12 noon Saturday at Voice Ministries Church, 1610 S. Nappanee St., Elkhart. Friends may visit from 4-8 p.m. Friday in Palmer Funeral Home-River Park, 2528 Mishawaka Ave., South Bend, and in the church Saturday one hour prior to services. Dave loved “Keeping It Simple.” He was a humble man, filled with passion for God, his family, friends and nature. He was a giving, loving and caring husband and father. Dave was encouraging and supportive, always urging them to follow their dreams. He always put his family first, doing whatever it took to provide for them. Dave had a servant’s heart, and loved helping others in any way he could. Dave was passionate about nature and had a spiritual reverence for creation — to be surrounded by nature was to be surrounded by God. He loved sharing his passion, and took many trips to East Glacier, Montana, with family and friends. Dave was a Ranger at the Mishawaka Res, a non-profit youth camping facility and Nature Preserve. He was zealous in his desire to improve and preserve the natural beauty of the Res. Dave’s interests included: Nature, Photography, Hiking, Backpacking, The Mishawaka Res, Glacier National Park, and being with his best friend, his wife, Janet. Dave was awarded the Community Service Award from the Martin Luther King Jr. Foundation of St. Joseph County and Outstanding Committee Service Award from the National Association of Neighborhoods Dave was a member of “Voice Ministries” of Elkhart. The spirit of Christmas is coming to The Res, even with all the preparation for the upcoming construction along Capital Avenue. The entrance may look different than what you remember, but you can still bring the beauty and fragrance of a real tree into your home. The Annual Christmas Tree Sale at The Res begins Thanksgiving weekend, and will continue through the December weekends until sold out. Look for the yellow arrow sign!

Back by popular demand, The Res will have soft needle White Pines, along with the short needle Scotch Pines.

Donation is $20 per tree.

The Big Sale will be on the following dates and times:
• November 27-28
• December 4-5
• December 11-12
• December 18-19
Saturday Hours – 9am – 3pm
Sunday Hours – 12pm – 3pm

The Res is also asking people to bring a non-perishable food donation to Jernegan Lodge for the Penn Township Food Pantry or a pet food donation for the Pet Refuge, and receive a free cup of hot chocolate, candy canes and holiday treats. Donations can be brought to The Res throughout December.

Despite the mess and changes that have happened near us due to Capital Avenue construction work The Res is still here! This is the current view looking down Scout Lane towards The Res entrance off Capital Ave. Look for the yellow arrow at the end of Scout Lane and come for a walk!

We are still here! Capital Avenue construction has started

If you have driven on Capital Ave near Lincoln Way recently you know how many changes have been going on. The utility companies are working in the area to prepare for Capital Avenue expansion. Sadly, many trees have been taken down in the past week. Due to the construction activities The Res sign and Scout Lane sign are no longer in the ground. We have tried to put The Res sign up on weekends in a bucket of sand, but that isn’t working very well. We apologize for the mess and the confusion. The best way to find Scout Lane now is to look across the street from Stephen’s Body shop between York and 5th St. on Capital Ave. At some point in the future our access will change and we will get to The Res off Lincoln Way and Kline Street.
