FLAG RETIREMENT CEREMONY – THURSDAY, JUNE 14, 2012 – FLAG DAY
A unique community event is being held at the Dave Norris Amphitheater at The Res in Mishawaka, Indiana on Thursday, June 14, 2012. The Res is located at 13950 Scout Lane in Mishawaka, IN, just off of Capital Avenue near the viaduct construction. Last fall, the Mishawaka Lions Club received a large donation of U.S. flags that needed to be retired. The Mishawaka Lions Club is partnering with The Res to host a community Flag Retirement Ceremony to respectfully retire the flags on Flag Day (06/14/12).
The event will start at 6pm and continue until 10pm. There is no admission cost. The community is encouraged to attend to celebrate the retirement of the U.S. flags at The Res. This is an excellent way to educate all generations of the proper ceremony required to retire an American flag and celebrate as a community.
Volunteers from local civic groups, Veteran groups, and Boys Scouts will assist visitors along the pathway lit with luminaries to the Dave Norris Amphitheater. Attendees are invited to bring their own American flags, if they need to be retired, to include in the ceremony. The Res and Mishawaka Lions are also asking that attendees please bring a non-perishable food item to be donated to the Mishawaka Food Pantry. Coffee and lemonade will be served at the Kiwanis Cabin during the evening. New U.S. flags will be available that evening for purchase.
Boy Scouts, Campfire USA, local civic groups, along with the Mishawaka Fire and Police Departments will be actively involved in the evening.
Visitors will enter The Res through a temporary roadway immediately south of the Southern Norfolk Railroad crossing off of Capital Avenue. Look for a brown and yellow “The Res” sign, marking the entrance. Driving parallel to the railroad tracks, continue heading east until reaching the tree line, then turn right (south), and enter at the original entrance of Scout Lane and The Res’ parking lot.
